Frequently Asked Questions

What is the National Youth Parliament?

The National Youth Parliament is an exciting opportunity for young Australians to step into the shoes of a Member of Parliament. In August 2026, 150 young people – one from every federal electorate – will come together in Canberra for a five-day, all-expenses-paid residential program.

You’ll meet Members of Parliament, debate policy ideas in a chamber setting, and take part in leadership and civics activities designed to grow your confidence, knowledge, and voice.

No experience is necessary, just a passion for learning and a desire to represent your community.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be aged 16 or 17 in August 2026
  • Live in Australia
  • Be able to attend the full program in Canberra
  • Have the support of a parent or guardian

We welcome applications from all backgrounds, communities, and lived experiences. You don’t need to have leadership experience or know how parliament works – that’s what this program is for!

  • Applications close: 11:59 pm, 21 November 2025
  • Applicants notified: 2 March 2026
  • Confirmation due (if selected): 20 March 2026
  • Possible program dates: 9 – 13 August or 16 – 20August 2026 (inclusive, TBC)

Please note: If you’re selected, you’ll also be required to participate in online training and may be invited to consult with your community or local representatives.

If you’re selected, you’ll:

  • Represent your federal electorate in a simulated national parliament
  • Debate and vote on mock bills (pieces of proposed legislation)
  • Meet real Members of Parliament and learn how the House of Representatives works
  • Build leadership skills and make lifelong connections with young people from around Australia

It’s a full, rich week of learning, speaking up, and stepping into national leadership spaces – all in the heart of Canberra.

Nope! The program covers all essential costs, including:

  • Flights or transport to and from Canberra
  • Accommodation for four nights
  • All meals and program activities

If you have accessibility needs, dietary requirements, or other considerations, we’ll work with you to make sure you’re supported.

Once applications close, the selection process will begin. If you’re chosen:

  • You’ll receive a welcome pack and letter of offer by email
  • Your parent or guardian will need to give formal consent, including permission for media (such as photos or videos)
  • You’ll complete online training and get ready for your role as a Youth Parliamentarian

Not at all. This program is for young people with curiosity, care, and courage – not just those who’ve been in debate teams or student council.

If you’re ready to listen, learn and lead – this is your moment.
